Maria de Jesus Fernandes
President of the Portuguese Biologists’ Association since March 31, 2021.
Main professional areas of interest: Environmental Policy, Nature Conservation, Biodiversity, Climate Emergency, and Sustainability.
She has had a long career as a senior official at ICNF – Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, where she was directly responsible for managing the eight protected areas within this region (Natural Park of Serras de Aire e Candeeiros; Arrábida Natural Park; Sintra-Cascais Natural Park; Paul do Boquilobo Nature Reserve; Berlengas Nature Reserve; Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve; Sado Estuary Nature Reserve; Protected Landscape of the Fossil Cliffs of Costa da Caparica).
She has also served and participated in several management and administrative bodies, including the Board of Directors of the Salinas do Samouco Foundation, the Management Boards of the Berlengas and Boquilobo Biosphere Reserves, the Executive Board of the Arrábida World Heritage and Biosphere Reserve Candidacy, and as Executive Director of the Alviela Ciência Viva Science Centre, among others.
